Can a grandmother become a citizen of Greece? Can I apply for Greece citizenship? Citizenship by descent is a form of birthright citizenship. Greek citizen (mother, father, grandfather , grandmother etc).

It means that if you have ancestors (such as parents , grandparents , or even great-grandparents ) from a country, you may be eligible to become a citizen of that country yourself.

It’s just much more of a pain in the ass.

Greece is one of those countries that’s pretty upfront about bloodlines and ethnicity and that sort of thing, and what they really want to see is lots of documentation. For the Consular Office of the Embassy of Greece in London all consular services, except for Notarizations, are handled by appointment only. Ethnic Hungarians can go through a complicated but doable process to claim ancestral citizenship as far back as their great grandparents , or three generations.

Those born to at least one Greek parent automatically acquire citizenship at birth. Those born in Greece to parents who have resided legally and permanently in Greece for at least years also automatically acquire citizenship at birth. Those born out of wedlock are automatically Greek if born to a Greek mother. The process of acquiring Greek nationality is very bureaucratic, as it requires filing a petition and a number of supporting documents and representation before various Greek Authorities. This type of citizenship is known as jus sanguinis and is commonplace across most of Europe.

Those born with a UK-born grandparent may be able to claim British citizenship in certain circumstances. This is called claiming citizenship by double descent. Only children of Irish citizens are eligible, the caveat being the parent must be Irish at the time of the birth, and the citizenship is only there after registration.
