Moving electric meter and fuse box

How to move your gas meter? Does anyone have experience of this? Can I move my meter?


We have a board with our fuse box , BT router and electric meter on it which needs to be moved due to some building work. Move a fuse box Typically this is needed when your electrician is rewiring your property or you need to move the fuse box in a more accessible place. Only your current supplier can move your meter. This will change your prices for gas and electricity , so check that it’s worth it overall before you switch.

We are only permitted to move the cable and fuse that are connected to your meter.


My local electricity company (EDF) did mine for £a couple of years ago.

I had to collect the cabinet from their local depot (free) and fit it to the wall. I also had to get a sparky in to run the new tails from the consumer unit down to the meter cabinet. Then you need to speak to your electricity supplier to have the meter moved to the new supply head location. In the kitchen there is the fuse box inside a large larder.


It is currently mounted on the right hand side wall inside the cupboard. Im looking to removing that wall to open up the kitchen. Where a meter box is used there are a choice of styles. See the next section for further information.


A meter box must be placed on the external side of a wall where it is accessible from the front of the property and is unlikely to be damaged. It must not open out onto a footpath or right of way. It can go beside, but not above or below, a gas. Is it just the fuse box ? Ours was moved easily from a cupboard next to the front door to the cupboard under the stairs.


Our electricians did it with no issues.

This included digging a hole in the road. Our expert will visit you to advise what is possible at your property. My electric meter is located in my hallway wall, a recess of approx 600mm x 400mm.


Does the door cover the frame or does the frame stick out around the sides of the door just like a normal door into a room?
